How To Write A Good Essay: Developing Your Skills
Writing an essay is an easy task if one follows some simple steps. Essays have many different applications and though styles may vary depending on the intention of the paper, the essential parts of any written paper are the same. Each essay consists of five basic parts and writing a paper on any topic will be a breeze if you know how to construct each of these parts. Here are the five basic steps that you must follow when constructing an essay:
- The introduction
- Main body
- Development of main supportive points
- Analysis and interpretation
- Conclusion
The introduction serves as a tool to entice a reader to want more of your paper. It should begin with an interesting hook followed by minor details about the subject. A thesis statement or exploratory question can be stated in this first paragraph as well. End this paragraph with an introduction into the second point you will be discussing in the main body.
You can now begin to outline your case in more detail starting with the most important points first. Develop this point fully giving examples or presenting experimental and observational evidence where possible. In the case of a fictional essay, begin development of the main character in the first section of the main body.
In the third and fourth paragraph you further develop the less important or environmental aspects of the subject. Give details of the conditions surrounding the situation or location where the particular incident takes place. Show where the main points fit into this bigger picture and discuss possible scenarios where things might have gone differently.
This paragraph can be short, its sole intention is to give an explanation for the situation presented by the subject. Show how every point discussed, including the opening statement, is connected to the others. You can also choose to show why this study was necessary by relating the subject to real life situations close to you or your intended readers. This can give readers a sense of connection to the issue which may help better their understanding of the topic.
The conclusion must be short, sweet and relevant. The reader must be able to relate to the conclusion statement after having read all your points or you have failed in your attempt to construct an essay. Study the data well, revise your points if you find any inconsistencies and formulate a conclusion based only on the information you presented.
